What is a Student Council?

A Student Council is a representative structure for students only, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, the Student Voice Co-ordinator, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students.

The role of the Student Council

• To act as role models for other students and to uphold the school rules at all times.
• To provide a forum for students to voice their opinions on relevant issues.
• To enhance communication between students, staff, management and parents.
• To help in creating a happy atmosphere and positive school relationships.
• To organise, promote and run school events which boost morale both within and between year groups.
• To contribute to overall school development by being involved in school policy formulation.
• To assist and be present at various school functions and on formal occasions.
• To make an annual report to the Board of Management.

Structure of the Student Representative Council (SRC)

• Head Girl (Chairperson)
• Deputy Head Girl (Secretary)
• Two elected Representatives from each class group.

Nominations and Elections

• The SRC class representatives (reps.) are elected in September each year.
• Nominations will be sought from each class following presentations made by the candidates.
• An official nomination form will be completed by the teacher in charge.
• The nomination form will be given to the Student Voice Co-ordinator prior to the election.
• SRC Elections will be organised by Prefects under the guidance of the Student Voice Co-ordinator.
• Voting is by secret ballot.
• Elections are by straight vote i.e. the two students with the most votes will be the SRC Representatives.
• Senior Prefects count votes and announce results.

Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl

• Fifth year Prefects can apply for the positions of Head Girl and or Deputy Head girl. Each applicant must submit a Curriculum Vitae and letter of application.
• Interviews will be conducted by the Principal, Deputy Principal and the Student Voice Co-ordinator.
• Applicants will make a brief presentation to staff and the sixth year student body.
• Staff and students vote for their preferred candidate via ‘Straight Vote’.
• There will be separate Ballot Boxes for the position of Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl.
• Selection is based on

  • Interview
  • Presentation to staff and students
  • Staff and student votes.
  • The Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl are introduced to the student body at the annual Awards Ceremony in May.

Prefects

• Prefects act as role models for other students and must uphold the school rules at all times.
• All fifth year students are invited to apply for the position of prefect upon return to school in August / September.
• Prefects are selected by the Student Voice Co-ordinator in consultation with the Principal, Deputy Principal and Year Head.
• Prefects organise, promote and run the SRC Elections.
• Prefects assist in hot lunch distribution and support supervising staff.

Senior Prefects

• Senior Prefects act as role models for other students and must uphold the school rules at all times.
• Prefects apply for the position after Christmas in fifth year. Applicants are interviewed.
• Senior Prefects are selected in May (of 5th year) following interview and are introduced to the student body at the annual Awards Ceremony in May.
• Senior prefects (6th Year) meet once a week and may have extra meetings if necessary.
• Senior Prefects count SRC Election votes and announce results.
• Senior Prefects assist in the organising of SRC events and engage in preliminary research for the events on behalf of the SRC.

Student Forum

The Principal and Deputy Principal meet with randomly selected students (not elected) from all year groups at regular periods during the year to discuss their experience of school life.

Graduation Committee

The Principal and Deputy Principal establish a sixth graduation committee to assit in the planning and organisation of the Graduation Mass and celebration in line with school tradition. The 6th year, Year Head has an open invitation to meetings.

The Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl and two students from each class group comprise the committee. Students express their interest and committee members are randomly selected.
