Senior Cycle Leaving Certificate

On completion of either the Junior Cycle or Transition Year, students enter the two-year Leaving Certificate programme. Before they commence Fifth Year, students will be asked to choose their subjects for the Leaving Certificate. Students usually take seven exam subjects.

All students study the following core subjects:

  • English
  • Irish
  • Mathematics.

Students may then choose three electives from the following list:

  • Art
  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Geography
  • History
  • Home Economics

Compulsory: Modern Foreign Language (MFL).

Additionally, students take Religious Education and Wellbeing modules in Career Guidance, S.P.H.E.(Health Education), and Physical Education.

Assumption Secondary School offers the prestigious Adele Farrell Memorial Scholarship to Dublin Business School.

Our Leaving Certificate students pursue further study at Irish universities and third-level institutions and we are part of the Trinity Access Programme.

Assessment & Monitoring: During the Senior Cycle, each student’s progress is closely monitored and they sit regular exams in all subjects.

Christmas Exams: Take place in early December.

Mock Leaving Certificate Exams: are held in early February.

Parent/Teacher meetings: are held for all students. Please consult the School Calendar for dates.

The first set of revised subjects will be introduced in schools in the 2025/26 school year.

In our school, the curriculum will change in Biology, Chemistry and Business.

There will be changes to the Geography curriculum in the 2026-2027 school year.
