DEIS
An introduction
DEIS stands for Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools.
The DEIS Programme began in September 2006. More than 240,000 students in 1,200 schools are supported in DEIS.
Schools do not need to apply for DEIS. Schools are included in DEIS based on information from the national Census and the school’s enrolment. All schools are considered for DEIS.
As a DEIS school we encourage students to set high expectations for themselves. Our aim is to support all students to achieve their potential through education.
We take particular care to make sure the students do well in English and Maths.
We work closely with parents and guardians to support their child’s learning and we work hard to make sure you and all children feel welcome in the school.
School supports for students in the DEIS programme
- The School Completion Programme (SCP)
- School Meals Scheme
- The Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL)
- Extra materials to help teachers.
- More staff
- Extra funding.
How DEIS helps students progress
DEIS supports help children to come to school every day and on time. There are extra supports through DEIS to encourage students to stay in school and complete their education.
Schools in DEIS have extra supports in place through primary school, to move into post-primary, as well as going on to college, apprenticeships or work.
Post-primary schools can use extra hours for guidance to help students to make decisions about their future.
Home School Community Liaison (HSCL)
The scheme aims to improve educational outcomes for students who are most at risk of poor attendance, participation and completing their education. The scheme also supports parents.

SCP - School Completion Programme
The School Completion Programme (SCP) is a targeted programme of support for primary and post primary children and young people who have been identified as potentially at risk of early school leaving or who are out of school and have not successfully transferred to an alternative learning site (i.e., Youthreach, Community Training Centre etc.) or employment.
It is a support under the Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) Programme, funded by Tusla Education Support Services (tess).
SCP aims to retain a young person to completion of the leaving certificate, equivalent qualification or suitable level of educational attainment which enables them to transition into further education, training, or employment.
The SCP is one of three strands of Tusla Education Support Service (tess) including the Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) Scheme and the Educational Welfare Service. All three strands share the same national outcomes i.e.:
- Improved Attendance
- Improved Participation
- Improved Retention
Who is SCP For?
The SCP Programme is a programme to support children and young people who are at risk of early school leaving and students of school going age who are not currently attending school.
SCP projects provide the following interventions to children and young people:

- Brief interventions for 8 weeks or less for students identified as needing an immediate short-term SCP led intervention.
- Targeted interventions to children and young people with significant support needs who have been identified through the SCP Intake Framework.
